Evaluation of COVID-19 Diagnosis Codes for Identification of SARS-CoV-2 Infections in a Nursing Home Cohort, 2022–2023

A retrospective cohort of 31,136 residents in 76 nursing homes across 8 states (January 2022 to June 2023). Problem-list COVID-19 codes were reconciled against SARS-CoV-2 testing and daily census records. Positive predictive value was 92% among residents continuously present in the facility, compared with 24% among those who were not, which matters for anyone using these codes to identify infections in EHR data.
